Hmm.. Maybe we do have a Pattern?

Travel Plans Travelogues Vintage Bus (June 2011 - present)

Apr 22, 2013 by Cherie Ve Ard 13 Comments

Many times we’ve been asked ‘So, do you have a pattern you follow each year?’

IMG_2710We always answer that we make it up as we go and don’t follow a pattern or routine. But as we prepare to get back out there on the open road this spring, I’m having a bit of dejavu.

See if you can detect a pattern here:

  • In the beginning of 2007, right after new-nomad Chris and I met – we stayed in my Florida home as I prepared my life to hit the road with him. We spent the winter taking week-long trial runs in his T@b trailer. Come spring .. we starting modifying the trailer to support us both and me crazily purging to get my stuff dwindled down to fit in a small box. We hit the road together on May 10.
  • In the beginning of 2008, we had just returned from 7-months on the road back to my Florida home. I needed a major surgery, so it was good the house never sold and I had a comfortable place to recuperate.  Come spring, we shifted focus to custom ordering our Oliver Travel Trailer and getting the house sold. We hit the road again in mid-June.
  • In the beginning of 2009, we took a fun temporary gig helping a iPhone app start-up company launch their new product at MacWorld, which involved a lot of social media outreach and orchestrating a roving party around the streets of San Francisco on a double decker bus with live DJs. Lots of crazy fun, and the gig kept us stationary.  Come spring, we hit the road eastward.
  • In 2010, well, we didn’t follow any pattern here.. we were all over the place, including spending the winter in St. Louis in zero degree temps.
  • In the beginning of 2011 we were in the middle of our winter in the US Virgin Islands. Come spring, we returned to the mainland and started our vintage bus hunt.
  • In the beginning of 2012, my father’s cancer had just returned and we stuck around Florida to be near my parents as his treatments started. Come spring, when things were looking stable – we hit the road for the summer.
  • In the beginning of 2013, my father’s cancer turned terminal and we were again based in Florida to be near my parents. Come spring, he peacefully passed away.. and here we are again, gearing up to hit the road.

Except for one year, we have a tendency to hunker down in an area for the winter and hit the road again come spring! And quite often, wintering in Florida.

None of that was planned and nor was it based on following the weather. It’s just the way it worked out, and that’s the way we like it!

Right now, we’re thinking we’ll be pulling up stakes at our spot in Melbourne sometime mid-next week.. and starting a meander towards Portland, Oregon. Except for passing through St. Louis sometime in mid-May – the route is  mostly unplanned.

Will be staying in NE by Grand Island at Bader for Memorial weekend, love you have you guys come visit. I am on track to start full-timing on June 1.
My camper is a bit bigger than the clamshell but not much 1988 22 ft Hi-Lo. Hardest part so far is making time and taking time to clear out nearly 60 years of collecting “stuff.” Your ebook has been a great help.

Come see us (camp hosting) at Crater Lake RV Park in Prospect, OR. If that doesn’t fit your bill, we understand there is a Satate Campground almost next door.

Your pattern is instinctive. People lived pretty much that kind of pattern until agriculture came to their areas, at most 5,000 years ago. Humans have been around for about ten times that long, so it still feels natural. Of course, I’m prejudiced; that’s exactly the pattern I want.

Oh.. in our case, when you look at the reasons we were places, it’s not so much instincts as it was circumstances.

You could take a long about way to MO and stop in Austin!

That would indeed be the long route. Thinking this time around, we may be bypassing Austin. Our usual reason for going there is to visit my bro, and he’s got a busy travel schedule himself this spring.

Thanks… if we decided to route through Kansas, we’ll keep that in mind as a possible driving break.

We shall see which way we take getting up that way, and who knows… you might see us pull in! It’s been far too long since we’ve seen Michael!

We currently reside at Oak Grove Park in Hatfield, PA and will for at least the next 2 months. If you’re ever up this way, say hi. I’d love to sell my significant other on the idea of a bus 😉

Thanks! At present time, I’m not thinking PA will be close enough to our general routing to divert. But you just never know how serendipity will interject.
