Tech Upgrade: iPhone 3G S

Jun 22, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 10 Comments

For those who haven’t known me for a while, you may not know that before going nomadic I used to be the Director of Competitive Analysis for Palm (the maker of the Pilot, Tungsten, and Treo) and PalmSource (the Palm OS operating system spinoff). It used to be my job to literally dissect every worthwhile […]

Campground Review: Gulpha Gorge @ Hot Springs National Park

May 28, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 4 Comments

Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, AR is one of the most unusual National Parks in the nation. First off, it is the smallest National Park, by far. And secondly – rather than the usual focus on preserving natural features – most of the hot springs here have been thoroughly developed, and the primary […]

Campground Review: Martin Creek Lake State Recreation Area (Near Tatum, TX)

May 27, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 1 Comment

Making our way from Austin towards St. Louis, we decided to put our Texas State Parks pass to use one more time with a stop for the night at the Martin Creek Lake State Recreation Area. The campground at Martin Creek Lake reminded us of the fabulous McKinney Falls State Park we had stayed at […]

Campground Review: Landa RV & Campground in New Braunfels, TX

May 25, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 10 Comments

One of our reasons for visiting Texas was to meet up with Cherie’s family at her father’s submarine veterans reunion in San Antonio, and visit her brother in Austin. We decided to stay just a short drive between the two in the scenic town of New Braunfels, at the Landa RV & Campground located right […]

Tech Review: Mikegyver 12v MacBook Power Supplies

May 12, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 81 Comments

One particular frustration that has vexed me for over three years now is that there is no “official” way to power any MagSafe-equipped Apple laptops directly off of 12v power.

But there is an alternative…

Mike Lee of MikeGyver.com has made a business of taking genuine Apple MagSafe tips, and splicing them onto 12v compatible power supplies…

Campground Review: McKinney Falls State Park (near Austin, TX)

May 7, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 6 Comments

Cherie grew up in Austin, and her brother and his wife live there today. It is a cool town, and a place we will want to return to often in our travels. Camping near a major urban area is always a challenge, but in McKinney Falls State Park we have discovered a great place to […]

Campground Review: Mather Campground @ Grand Canyon National Park

Apr 29, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 5 Comments

At the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, there are two choices for camping – the beautifully wooded Mather Campground, or the crowded parking lot known as Trailer Village.

Campground Review: Cottonwood @ Joshua Tree National Park

Apr 16, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 2 Comments

Passing through Joshua Tree National Park, we spent the night at the Cottonwood Campground near the park’s south entrance. This is the closest campground inside Joshua Tree to Interstate 10. There are no hookups at Cottonwood, but there are nice flush toilets, and an RV dump station is available. All of the sites are spread […]

Campground Review: Thornhill Broome Beach Campground

Apr 10, 2009 by Chris Dunphy 2 Comments

This campground offers parallel style parking for RVs and/or tent camping right along Route 1, and right along the beach. There are no hook-ups, so RVers should come prepared with a full battery and water tanks (although, there is fresh water available). Sheltered porta-potties are provided. The camping fee was just $15/night, and for us – it was a perfect way to spend sometime along the ocean.

Movie Review: Into the Wild

Nov 28, 2008 by Chris Dunphy Leave a Comment

Into the Wild tells the true story of Christopher McCandless and his tragic quest to challenge himself and rebel against modern society by journeying alone and almost entirely unprepared into the deep Alaskan wilderness in the summer of 1992. There is a lot I admire about Chris. He went to extremes to break free from […]
