Hanging out with Loons along China Lake, Maine

Travelogues

We've kept a Google My Maps with all of the awesome invites & recommendations we've gotten. Handy for travel planning!
We’ve kept a Google My Maps with all of the awesome invites & recommendations we’ve gotten. Handy for travel planning!

When we announced we were spending this summer up in the northeast, we put a call out for tips for places to see and invitations for driveway surfing.

MaineBob, a long time Technomadia fan, and his lovely wife Lynne were amongst the generous invitations we received. And it worked out perfectly along our routing to take them up on their offer.

We left out of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and made the jaunt over to their little slice of heaven.

This post covers the dates of August 25-28.

Our view from our driveway surf.. not too shabby!

Bob and Lynne wrote us multiple times during our wandering around New England, making it clear their invitation was genuine (something we always appreciate) and that they would truly enjoy hosting us.

It didn’t hurt that they sent us photos of the view we’d have.

We pulled down their street, to find our excited hosts jumping up and down in the driveway to greet us. They offered us several options for parking in their spacious yard.

They also had some other nomadic friends stopping in over the weekend, and they had plenty of space for us all.

Dinner convergence - new friends made!

We all got settled in, and plans started to converge for happy hour and dinner on their lake deck. Their friends had picked up some fresh Halibut on the way in to share with everyone, we put together some fresh veggies and provided the grill (we love our O-Grill – big enough to feed 6, but small enough to carry everywhere we go!).

It’s always fun when the nomadic guests can provide the grub.

It was a lovely kick off evening getting to know everyone, and we instantly knew this was going to be a great stop!

Thankfully, Bob and Lynne had their own chores to attend to – including Bob working full time. This reduced the temptation to blow off work and play the entire stay.

Chores.. chores! First generation oil change!

Aside from our usual work projects (writing, reviewing and answering questions about mobile internet), we also changed the oil in our new propane generator. After nearly a year, we had finally reached the 20 hours recommended for the first break-in oil change.

There were many casual happy hours, swims in the lake, converged meals, walks around the neighborhood, dinner at the famous ‘China Dine-ah’ and even a boat excursion with some of the neighbors.

And of course lots of getting to know each other.

These folks are passionate about the state of Maine, sustainable living and excited to share the beauty of the area with others. In fact, Bob was interviewed on Mike Wendland’s Roadtreking podcast a while back about RVing in Maine. Bob is also the official Loon counter for the area, taking on the responsibility of tracking these migratory water birds that inhabit China Lake.

It was a truly awesome stop and getting to know Bob & Lynne. Marvelous folks, and who we hope to cross paths with again!

We’re excited for their upcoming adventures of integrating in more RVing into their lifestyle in their sweet little Roadtrek.

Thanks again guys!

What’s Up Next?

Ok, I’m not quite a month behind on travelogues.. but it’s getting awfully close. I’m going to do my best to catch up the blog this week – so be prepared for a deluge of travelogue posts (hopefully).

The adventures have been outpacing our available time for non-essential projects lately, which is overall a GREAT thing.

We’re now in eastern Massachusetts and will soon be moving on to the New London area of Connecticut to meet up with my mom.

We have some exciting stuff up, and I’m anxious to get the blog caught up so we can share what is brewing.

Sounds like you are managing work/play time well. We can wait for the posts. And, if you skip a few, we won’t really mind. We’ll just be eagerly waiting for the next one. It’s not really like waiting for Christmas, but it is kinda similar. You just make us salivate until the next one comes. It’s really cool!

The first time I camped in Canada, the park ranger told me there was a shower available, but you had to bring a looney with you. I told him I was sorry, but my husband wasn’t with me, and I only shower with him!

Loons are awesome – the state bird of Minnesota and they are so cool to hear on the lakes at night!

Looks like a lovely stop with lovely hosts. I’m sorry we’re missing Maine this time, but just can’t see everything before the weather turns too cold 🙁 Love the pink light on the water – beautiful.
