Bus Projects Engine Rebuild

Aug 1, 2013 by Cherie Ve Ard 31 Comments

Lots of progress this week, and we’ve been super super busy.

The engine back on the cradle and painted up all pretty! (We went with 'Detroit Diesel Series 60 Blue')

Our team here at Interstate Power has been pulling extra full days to get this job completed while still being meticulous.

Engine being installed into the bay - and a new muffler mount being fabricated. Almost there!

We’re working overtime trying to keep on top of everything, especially trying to stay ahead of the shop with our own projects. Our days have pretty much started at 6am when the crew comes in, and end around 10p when the sun goes down. And then even later to finish up our online work.

Rinse. Repeat.

A test drive?? Oh, guess we'll need tail lights! Better finishing up that job!

We were just tugged into the garage again this morning for what is hopefully the finishing touches of the installation, and then a test drive and final tweaks.

After several weeks of being in one spot.. we moved a few spot. Loving the new view.

*crossing our fingers* we’re on the road and somewhere pretty for the weekend.

How thrilling that the end is in sight. I’m sure the road is calling. How many miles does this engine have on it already and how many more could reasonably be expected before more major work?

I somehow doubt this bus will ever see another million miles, unless we’re counting the trips around the sun.

The best birthday present would be a diesel engine that just won’t quit for hundreds of thousands of miles! Good luck and happy birthday! Bruce

I certainly hope that your test drive goes well, and that your re-enginered bus performs like new. And thanks for sharing the pitfalls as well as the highlights of RV life.

Glad your on the last leg of this rebuild journey. Did they rebuild the transmission?

We had them thoroughly inspect the transmission, and it showed no signs of needing to be rebuilt. However all the connecting things (gaskets, hoses, wiring, etc.) have been completely redone.

The shop noise isn’t so bad.. we just get used to it. And it helps that the bus is pretty well insulated.

Thanks for sharing so much with us you guys. Personally I couldn’t have done it – had my life laid open for the world to question (and criticize) as I’ve seen with you two. It really speaks to the type of people you are – sacrificing self so others can learn. You’ve made the hard choices and now you’ll reap the reward. Here’s hoping the road ahead is smooth and the wind is at your back.

      Thanks Debo 🙂

Thankfully, the benefits of sharing generally outweigh the occasional negative. Aside from hopefully giving others a glimpse of the experience to better prepare their own adventures – sharing has also brought us new friends, support and access to resources we wouldn’t otherwise have. After all, how would someone know they have something to offer if they didn’t know we had a need?

So it’s not totally self-less.. although, there are days it is tougher to take a deep breath and hear the questions/requests in the manner they are usually intended, and not as criticisms to defend.

I’m excited for you that it’s almost ready! Your going to feel so happy cruising down the highway with that spanking
new baby engine. Give it a good christening with a bottle of champagne. Happy trails!

Looking good and praying your test drive goes great. If the shop did as great job on on the paint job, as I am sure they did, then Zephyr’s new Blessed Heart will last another life-time. Your care and Love of Zephyr has been shown through-out the time you have been in Montana. Thank
You again for letting us enjoy your ride and I hope it continues to a very Joyous ending. Take care, have fun and please give Kiki a pat for us.
    Respectfully,
    S. Kaeseman
