Ramblings: Tales from Nomads – Porkchop Express

Ramblings

Jul 11, 2012 by Cherie Ve Ard 13 Comments

Meet Porkchop and Lucy

We were blessed with the very rare opportunity to be part of a couple’s first day on the road as full-timers – and they were kind enough to let us interview them on camera.

Porkchop and Lucy were tired of the city they were living in, and were trying to choose – what’s next?  No particular city was calling them, and they were contemplating renting vacation homes around the country to gain some mobility and check out some new cities.

Then Porkchop got intrigued with the idea of RVing instead – they wouldn’t have to pack all the time and would be able to move on whenever they liked without rental contracts.

The problem?  Lucy wasn’t so keen on the idea.

In this interview, these two share with us their (very recent and fresh on their mind) process of coming to this decision and how they eventually came to see eye to eye.

Porkchop is a remote software developer, still working for the same company he has for many years.  He’s not yet actually told them they’ve moved into an RV (and in case you’re wondering, no – that’s not his real name).  But it seems to be working out remarkably well for them. We checked in at their two month nomadiversary last week – and Porkchop has actually received a promotion with his company, and Lucy reports the honeymoon phase is over and they’re settling in quite nicely into their new lifestyle.  (She’s loving it by the way!)

Im a 44yr old freelance photographer, art teacher and artist. I went full time in a converted Mac Tools truck (1986 Grumman, 25ft)… Mostly moving around lower mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island right now, but heading down the west coast in fall 🙂
Best creative headspace and lifestyle ever! Many people are flipped out when I tell them how I live, some are genuinely intrigued. Viva la DIY/declutter revolution !!:-)

Great video! My hubby & I just recently started playing around with the idea of RV living so these vids will help us figure out what’s in store. Would love to hear more about what folks did to prepare for this lifestyle change, particularly getting the finances in order. Best of luck to Porkchop & Lucy (…and Tito!)

Hey Tammy.. and welcome. Really love hearing that the video series is helpful to you. Some of the folks we talk with do talk more in-depth about their financial planning & situation, so do keep tuned. We allow each household to choose what they’re comfortable disclosing. And obviously, it’s going to vary widely based on the situation.

Great video interview guys! We would love to be included when next our paths cross. We are on Washington coast on Whidbey Island (well later today) and then heading down into Oregon late this month, then heading back east to Campbellsville, KY to the Amazon fulfillment center for 2 months beginning 10/1….crossing the US through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas…don’t know your travel plans.

Most likely sticking within a day or two drive of Florida is our foreseeable routing.

We were just kicking off the project when we met back in Cedar Key, but should have gone ahead and gotten you guys then anyway. Next time for sure!
