Push For Heat

Vintage Bus (June 2011 - present)

Jun 29, 2012 by Cherie Ve Ard 7 Comments

Last week was delightfully pleasant in St. Louis and we thought we were doing good with our plan to stay away from extreme temperatures this summer.

Imagine our surprise when the forecast started looking like this:

108?!?  You’ve got to be kidding us.

Sure enough, our digital thermometer (placed in the shade) topped out at 109 degrees yesterday. Turns out, yesterday was the hottest day on record for St. Louis.  No, not the hottest day for June 28… the hottest day for the month of June… EVER.

We’re going to blame our friend’s Sam & Tracy of ZenNomads (no need to click through, they’ve not updated it since our first meeting in Texas over 2 years ago – *nudge* *nudge*). They arrived earlier this week, and we’re enjoying a delightful rendezvous together.

Sammy, did ya have to push the button??

We went out for dinner the other evening using the Metro, and I think Sam might have misunderstood the purpose of this button at the train station? They really should disconnect this thing when it’s not winter out.

Generally we stay in Chris’ parents driveway while we’re visiting St. Louis, but not this week.  We moved over to the Casino Queen’s RV Park right along the Mississippi River to clear out parking space for the big 90th birthday party (which was fabulous!), and to be able to park near Sam & Tracy.

We are most thankful for the 50 amp electrical service so that we can keep both A/C’s cranking. And for Zephyr’s awesome insulation that is helping us maintain reasonably cool temps.

Other benefits include a fantastic view of the Arch across the way, the geyser next door and easy access to the Metro to get downtown and into Forest Park. We’re extended here through the 4th of July, which providing the fireworks show still goes off – we should have prime front row seats for.

Unfortunately.. the heat wave is showing no signs of letting up much before we leave. We have several more days ahead of 106+ temps to endure.

Of course, compared to our summer in Arizona this time last year – these temps are like a cool breezy spring day.

128 is in no jeopardy of losing it’s place as our highest temperature yet.

The last of the snow where I am just melted a few days before you posted this, and I was still using my heater to keep in the 50’s in the morning. The weather is nice now, and I only need to go up Mt Hood a few miles if I want snow. (year-around skiing there)

It’s a wicked 99 here today and muggy as the East can be…longing for some Pacific Northwest back!

Anything over 90 East or 100 West is just plain uncalled for though. I blame the President. Or maybe Al Gore. Or cavemen, taking up all that ice age to themselves!

Now that’s HOT…we managed to hit 110 in St Louis when we passed thro’ there in 2010, but that was in August. Can’t believe you survived 128 in the rig!

Survived is about the right word. 😀 And we could only run one A/C with the power situation we had. Amazing we got through, for sure. Probably helps that Zephyr was converted in AZ with the heat in mind, thus really ample insulation.

You guys have definitely done things right by being in Oregon this summer.

Wow you guys are getting to hang out with Tracy and Sam? I am so jealous! That’s totally worth suffering through the heat. Play some Dominion (or any other games) for us.

Everyone should come to the Easter Sierra’s it’s in the 70’s here. There’s also more free camping than you can poke a stick at.
