Road Ahead: Fall & Winter 2009

Oliver Travel Trailer (July 2008 - May 2011) Travel Plans

Nov 7, 2009 by Cherie Ve Ard 4 Comments

We’ve been hanging out in Southern California without much of a plan on which direction will be next. Things are finally began to gel once we made it a priority to spend holidays with family this year – which means heading eastward!

Winter 2009

Our projected nomadic path forward might look something like this:

Tomorrow – Depart our technomadic rendezvous in San Diego with Ben Willmore and rendezvous with Route 66 nomad Sandi Wheaton before she heads back to Canada.
Nov 11ish –  Hang out with some other cool Oliver Travel Trailer owning folks in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Nov 14-18 – High tail it to Kansas, perhaps exploring some of Route 66 ourselves.
Nov 19 – Dec 23 – Trying our hand at ‘workamping’ at the amazon.com distribution facility in Coffeyville, Kansas.  With so many of our RVing friends signing up for the gig, we decided – what the heck? Camping is paid for, the money is relatively decent and it’s on our way to St. Louis.  Worst case, we get to meet some other full time RVers and get paid to workout for a month.
Dec 24 thru ?? – In St. Louis visiting Chris’ family for the holidays and reconnecting with our growing community there.

As always, if we’re going to be passing by you – let us know! We love meeting up with people.

——–
PS. Did you know that we’re an Amazon.com affiliate? If you’re going to be shopping online anyway this holiday season, starting your shopping on Amazon.com off with this link will support our travels in two ways: 1) We’ll get a small cut of your purchases at no extra expense to you and 2) you’ll be providing work to many full time RVers working at the distribution centers this holiday season, including us!

    Cheers!

We’ve actually been exchanging experiences with Rene over at Live Work Dream in this post – http://www.liveworkdream.com/2009/12/01/recipe-for-stew-of-discontent/. All and all, I’d say Kansas is a much more pleasant experience. Aside from the aspect of actually having to *work*, we really don’t have any complaints.

Of course, we’re in the luxurious position of just checking out what this workamping thing is all about and doing this more for a peak into this side of consumer culture and a more blue collar workforce than either of us has experienced before. We’re chocking it up to being paid to experience. We sorta more look at this as being investigative undercover reporters (except, we’re not really reporting or all that undercover) than being temps. So from that aspect… yes, we are enjoying it. But dang.. our feet hurt! And where’s the hot tubs??

Do I want to make a career out of it? Heck no! If anything, it’s reaffirmed that the ‘normal’ life we’ve created and our typical work life totally rocks.

Would we do it again? Likely not. And that’s more because we’re experience junkies and try to avoid repeating experiences unless they have something significantly new to introduce us to. The ExpressPro folks here really have paved an excellent path for a pretty positive workamping experience. Yes, it’s physically challenging work and you will earn your dollars.. but they really look out for you and go out of their way to make sure you’re successful in integrating in. And the Amazon folks seem to really appreciate the mobile workforce that comes in to help out at peak season.

      – Cherie

Looks like you won’t be the only technomadic RV’ers at Amazon this season, these folks will be there as well — http://hitekhomeless.net/

Fun and safe travels back to the Midwest!

Awesome.. thanks for the heads up to other cool technomadic folks 🙂 Looks like they ended up at the Fernley, NV location – whereas we’re headed to Kansas. So hopefully our paths will cross with them in the future. – Cherie
