Hi Cheri, Chris,

... and too, Pete and Kara. I just re-read all of this wonderful post, and all the comments.

Chris, I thought you'd enjoy hearing that Google loaded this among the top THREE returns on my search string "LeSharo LED tail light conversion", for no particular reason, apparently. Anyway, I've been giving that lil 'Sharo some TLC since you brought it home to me. Thank you, guys, for every care you took with it.

I did repair the coach power supply/charger unit. It had a cracked ceramic ballast resistor needed replacing. Cost to fix: $0, as a neighbor of mine has a ton of old parts from this and that in his shop. The coach battery revived nicely once serviced and recharged. That bad resistor is a common problem, I learned.

Pete & Kara, I really need to go find everything you've posted about your year in a LeSharo. I'd really like to see photos of what you did with your redesign of the front-end floorplan. I could really see trying that in mine. Using the bed in the back as a dinette conversion space has always been a hassle, and the two aft-facing second row seats in the front have never seen much use at all. What you've done does sound like a great mod to try. I wish you guys good luck getting your engine going.

Chris, Cherie, some time soon Ann and I ride the LeSharo down into Florida, and you can re-live the "adventure"! :-)

Hi Chris&Cherie,
Have been following your website since a while, because we are also converting a truck-camper, European style. We're planning a family trip for a minimum of 2 years.
You are already looking at the Webasto like solution (http://www.webasto.us/general/en/html/8369.html), but now there are also cooking appliances that work on diesel, like the X100 from Webasto (http://www.webasto-outdoors.com/cooking/diesel-cooker-x100.html).
Webasto is also working on a gas free solution for campers/RVs.
Good luck with the finishing touches on the conversion. It looks great!!
By the way we put a link on our website to yours. Might be interesting for European readers.

Hey Chris,

That totally makes sense. I've also read that statistically Android users like myself spend way less on apps. Sometimes I wonder if that's because the overall quality of the apps just isn't as good on Android though. In any case I think I'll fire up my iPhone just for this app!

Thanks!

Hi Duncan -

We would love to do an Android version, and would happily work with a developer who wanted to do the port and split the proceeds.

But as far as we've been able to work out, the Android app marketplace just isn't financially worth investing in. Very few Android users seem to be actually willing to buy apps, and 'Coverage?' is not well suited to being ad supported.

We estimate (and have gotten bids) that an Android port would cost between $10k - $30k, and we just can't see how the app would ever generate a return on the investment.

So, as far as Android goes, unless someone approaches us wanting to do the work or pay up-front for the work.... Sorry.

By the way Chris,
No wish to stray off topic but my (easily)modified Fridge and modified freezer are pulling very low amounts of power now. for both together during non sunshine (battery) hours (16 to keep it easy) Energy Star figures show they should pull 1Kw combined, mine in fact are pulling 340 watts total (240W freezer + 100W fridge) during this 16 hours. Perhaps I should write up a "How to" post ?? I have several other mods too.

What trials Tom! We miss our Lesharo! After living in our Lesharo in Austin, TX for a year, we took off for California in December only to break down in Tucson, AZ.

Our transmission was toast (the automatic transmission on those suckers are notoriously weak). We were stuck. And Pete had three days to get to the Bay Area to start his new job. We had no choice but to leave it behind and pack up a rental car.

We hired a transport company to haul our baby Lesharo back to Austin where our highly skilled Renault mechanic has been working on it for the past couple months. We had bought a "junkyard" Lesharo in November to use for parts and it turns out it's in great condition. Good engine. Stellar manual tranny. Our mechanic is currently working on installing the manual transmission in our livable Lesharo.

In the meantime, we bought a 1995 Chevy Astro Van and did a makeshift RV conversion (basically, we built a lofted bed). So at least we have a place to stay and are still living rent free until our Lesharo makes it out to California!

People tell us we're crazy all the time about holding onto the Lesharo and putting so much work into the original engine. Many folks just go for the $18,000 conversion- but that's just not in us. The Renault is bulletproof- it just needs the right love first. And we have the best mechanic in the country to help us out. We just wish we could be back in Texas working with him to learn more about this precious engine. It's hard work owning an old vehicle (such as a 1985 Lesharo or a 1961 bus!), but the payoff is fabulous!

The little Lesharo that could! Happy travels and tribulations!

Peace,
Pete&Kara

I am near Plant City. My self-converted box truck is not ready to roll yet (I need to get a tag LOL).

I recently moved in so will need to find my camera software (new computer) to send pics. but basically;
I bought a 2002 box truck from GA. (having had enough of the rat race and my ex's BS so gave up my 7 acres to her). I then fitted it out as a self sustained "Man Cave" from which I run my office too. Living wise it is finished now but I have a few mechanical jobs still to do and a paint job.

In Tampa there is a place that sells heavy gauge aluminum angle very cheaply, it is this I used to make the collapsible solar panel frame. Just nuts and bolts NO welding.

I am near Plant City. My self-converted box truck is not ready to roll yet (I need to get a tag LOL).

I recently moved in so will need to find my camera software (new computer) to send pics. but basically;
I bought a 2002 box truck from GA. (having had enough of the rat race and my ex’s BS so gave up my 7 acres to her). I then fitted it out as a self sustained “Man Cave” from which I run my office too. Living wise it is finished now but I have a few mechanical jobs still to do and a paint job.

In Tampa there is a place that sells heavy gauge aluminum angle very cheaply, it is this I used to make the collapsible solar panel frame. Just nuts and bolts NO welding. It is adjustable to the four seasons insolation inclination or flat against the truck side within a couple of minutes although it does need two people.

Sir Sparks - your solar sunshade sounds absolutely awesome! I'd love to learn more about how you built it. Do you have any pictures or details posted anywhere?

Checking your website, it seems like you might be nearby too. Want to get together and compare notes? :-)

Sounds similar to what we're aiming for, Linda. Make sure you measure all your energy use to make sure your solar array and battery bank will be sufficient, and that you have a plan for cloudy days, or needing to park in shade. Solar is fantastic, but it's not always available or enough to keep up.

Ahh... the Le'Sharo. Such adventures! Glad we only had to endure a month of it. It sure did set us up well to make sure we knew what we were getting ourselves into with a vintage bus. So far, the Le'Sharo was much more of a challenge.

Heh.. don't know what's particularly brave about taking out an unsafe system? Remodeling an RV isn't all the much different than remodeling a house, and it's been fun!

Hmm... making the bus fly. Now that would be sweet!

Fantastic, Nina! So glad to hear you're giving it a try. Great advice on tapering off on shampoo first and trying it while away from social opportunity. Makes the transition period so much easier.

I honestly haven't given any thought to hair brushes. Still using the same ole kind I have for years. Do let me know if you decide to give it a try and what your results are.

Just wanted to thank you for finally giving me the impetus to go poo-free. Decided to start while we were in the desert a few weeks back and so far so good. LOVE the way my hair feels. I had already decreased my shampooing to twice/week a long time before I started so the transition wasn't as greasy as I thought it would be. So far still going about 2x/week, but will start to lengthen that in coming weeks.

-> Do you use a natural bristle brush to pull the natural oils thro' your hair? Trying to decide what brush to use.

Okay folks! I got one too! we drove our"just purchased for a bargain" '85 Le'Sharo down from north georgia to concord ga without leaving second gear. Next day, 3rd gear working when heading up to Charlotte NC but no dash heat (its Christmas holidays) so used rear house heater. two days later, heading home in heavy rain (dashboard heater lever working now) but brake shoes come loose on a rear wheel. limping without effective braking, we pulled into a tire shop (its day after christmas), we cut and seal the rear brake line and tie up the shoes to drive back to concord ga. next day we leave for panhandle of Florida. Still got air in lines, so we pump pedal twice before effective braking. Alternater light blinking (is that okay?) on way home. ordered alternater, rear brake kits, sealed the roof parts (yeah, it leaked you know), but finally got the auto-cruise working on return trip! yep, one day at a time. We got about 25 things not working, and 25 days to fix it until the next trip. oh dern.. generator tailpipe just dropped! (that makes 26) BUT, No way wud I empart myself from my faithful Le'Sharo either.

I'm making plans to be a solo snowbird. I'm considering going all electric and diesel in a Class B with three solar panels and three or four AGM batteries. Hydronic heat/water, induction cookplate, microwave/convection oven for the occasional batch meat cooking. Does this power system at sound all doable to you two?

If you do go with PV panels consider a collapsible awning/rigid sunshade. After I filled my (smallish) roof with 1020 watts of PV I built an awning/sunshade that collapses in a few minutes, this gave me an extra 520 watts and a place to escape the sun/rain. Now with almost 1600 watts I can run a small AC unit as well.

And even if street parking or other some such isn't available for a conference you want to attend there are many other options. Sometimes networking before hand can score you driveway surfing with local peers. And RV Parks nearby are generally significantly cheaper than convention hotel rooms. We regularly incorporate a variety of events into our travels, as do many other RVers. Even (un)attending SXSW, we were able to grab a RV spot fairly last minute ... it was pricey for our typical camping budget, but dirt cheap for a convention budget.

Nope.. not designing around extreme situations. If we found ourselves in such extremes for some unforeseen situation and the 200+ degree hydronics capability wasn't able to keep up - well, we'd find a solution. But in all likelihood if we found ourselves in such conditions, it would probably be a catastrophic earth climate event - like Yellowstone erupting, meteor hitting the earth, reversing of the poles, ice caps melting, etc.

But heck, never thought we'd experience 127 degrees either. So, ya never know. We plan for what we can anticipate, and adapt as necessary when called for.

Sorry, I did miss the "And heating" portion before hot-water. Makes sense that it can be an all-in-one solution.

As for temperatures, well, we were camping in temps ranging from -20c to -36c (on one of our nights) which when you do the conversion from metric are in a whole different ballpark. At -36c even the propane furnace alone was woefully inadequate in our fifth wheel, we had 3 other electric heaters supplementing throughout the trailer to avoid having it run basically constantly.

I understand you are not likely planning (at least willingly) to be in these sorts of extremes, but just playing devils advocate when I thought you were planning to rely on resistance heating. ;)

Good to know it's a trend in the Class-A world. We know that some of the very high end professional bus conversions and Class-As are also utilizing LFP batteries, so that definitely makes sense.

Forget paying for a room - you might be able to get official permission to "camp" in your motorhome in the parking lot. Or, if you don't want to ask but are up for some stealth camping... Just park and blend in.

When we attended the iPhone Dev Camp, we actually managed to get permission from the host company (PayPal) to stay in the back parking lot. We also got official permission from the hotel for when we went to Cherie's dad's sub-vets reunion.

Staying in your own home sure beats a hotel room in every possible way, and it is much cheaper!

Hi Mark.. please re-read the posting in its entirety. It sounds like you completely skipped over the part where we plan to address this by installing a diesel burner hydronics system for all our heating (air, water and engine pre-warming). We have no intention of our space heater being our long term heating solution. There are other options than electric and propane.

Our bus is also pretty darn well insulated, thus far we've not needed to run a single space heater more than 30 minutes at bedtime to keep our coach warm enough all night in low 40-degree weather. We have even done a couple nights off-grid in mid-30 degree weather with the space heater.

Have you done the cost comparisons of being forced to run your generator for what might amount to trivial (yet long term) amp draws in certain situations, versus sticking with at least a limited propane setup?

Fridges have come up in efficiency, and your stove (as mentioned) is only used in short bursts (ditto hot water), but some items like electric heating is potentially on consistently for long periods, and running multiple electric heaters (given the size and probable lack of insulation in your bus) all night on batteries simply isn't going to be realistic no matter how large your bank.

The energy-dense nature of propane (as you mentioned) is what makes it the go-to option for RV's, especially for heating, and speaking from experience (We've winter camped in our fifth wheel) given the incredibly poor insulation on most RV's, keeping them warm in the cool weather is a BIG challenge. I couldn't even fathom it being possible without shore power in many situations without a propane furnace in play.

Good write-up! We do alot of roasting/baking in the oven so that's probably the #1 thing which would hold us back from all-electric, although I think (for us) everything else could go. Alot of the new Class A's are coming out all-electric these days (in fact it's getting harder & harder to find new A's with propane). Definitely a trend.

We have a great little grill that we got on Amazon.. it's linked to on the kitchen gadgets link in the post. We love it.

Occasional escape camping and living full time in a RV have very different design elements and considerations. Ours is our home, and needs to be completely livable.

Solar ovens are cool.. could be fun to play around with. But baking just isn't our thing.

And yes, as outlined in the post - we plan to double our battery bank and add solar sometime this year.

We don't live in or do we ever anticipate living in our tiny travel trailer .... it's just an escape pod & major cooking is not something we want to do in an escape pod! I, particularly, don't really like to "camp" without shore power, so our little trailer is totally electric -- microwave oven, lights, etc. We do carry a portable propane grill with us & it has 1/2 grill - 1/2 griddle, so we don't even have to dirty up pans to cook meat, eggs or even pancakes. We've adapted it to use a larger propane tank than the little cylinders, so it's a great compromise. We even cook green beans in the can on top of the griddle and have yet to find too many things we can't generally make work. Ours is a Blue Rhino we got on Amazon for about $75 (online research revealed it as one of the most powerful, efficient ones for its size & price) and it folds up and stows away when we aren't using it .... in fact, we like it so much, we often use it at home instead of firing up the big propane grill in the backyard --- even in bad weather, you just need a covered area, front porch, awning, even an umbrella or makeshift tent/lean-to. It might be a great compromise if you find you are craving a pizza on the grill or someone wants charred animal flesh!

You two do the best write ups.
would you add another battery pack at any time (Li-Ion) and solar panels on the roof? You got SOOO much roof.
A solar oven is what we carry. http://www.sunoven.com/
Works extremely well.
we leave in 18 days to head out to Great Basin National Park for the summer and plan on being there in May.

We actually did our first 1/2 marathon just 2 months ago. So it's not really as spontaneous as it seems :) (Well, that first one WAS totally last minute without training.)

As we've not had much time to keep in training lately, we'll probably walk this one and enjoy the music along the route.

I have to say, if I was suddenly required to run a half-marathon at super-short notice, the ticket price would be the last thing on my mind! You guys must be super-fit to eve attempt this, much less without training up for it. Congrats! I think it would kill me :0)
Though I did once do a rather large walk with no training, which concerned the guides at our free planning meeting. "It's just a walk," I told them, "I'll get fit on the way!"
Not so sure that's possible with a half-marathon...
Best of luck to you both!

I know that pain well. I decided to hit the road in 2007 and was finally able to sell my house in 2008. Unfortunately, only because I was willing to shell out a large wad of cash to pay off the mortgage in addition to what I could sell it for. Well worth it for me to cut those ties. Best wishes.

For SF conventions, even the at-the-door price is usually only a small part of what it costs to attend. (At least the way I used to, staying at the convetion hotel in most cases.) I'm still trying to work out the logistics to see if I can attend some now that I'm living in a motorhome.

Enjoying having a good browse on your blog today and I know I will be back. This post gave me a bit of anxiety. I was so looking forward to leaving for our next phase of location independence with 2 suitcases and selling out with everything in it - now we can't sell (thanks economy) I actually need to start buying to create a vacation rental. You live and you learn - we won't buy again :-) Or maybe we'll buy a bus!

For sure.. and we have done this in the past. However, it's something we only do for events we have a very reasonable chance of attending and they make the transfer process as easy as possible. Aside from the financial risk, it's a lot of logistics & time to pre-purchase, receive event passes (if its not all electronic), find a buyer and then transfer them on.

And besides, a lot of the times we don't even know an event exists until we've decided we're heading somewhere. And some events just simply don't allow for transfers.

Roll with the punches, Baby! You're right ... flexibility is often more prized than a few dollars. However, you COULD buy tkts in advance to something you really want to attend and if you find you won't be going, you could sell them to someone else who's lack of planning is even more evident! I wouldn't do it too often, but if it was something I was pretty sure I'd want to attend, I might risk it. Those other "non planners" might be pretty stoked to get the tickets at such a discount providing you can't make it....

Of course you can't tell anyone, or I'll have to.......Anyway, it'Silver Lake on the Withlacoochee Army Corp of Engineers campground. Fabulous paddleing and a Rails to Trails bike bath up to Inverness. I love your positive got to do what I got to do attitude. Sounds like you are going with the flow very well.

We were in Austin a couple years ago for the half marathon. We stopped at a deli after the race (Manny-Hatten's) and asked our waiter for recommendations on what to see. It was fun hiking those hills after the 13.1 mile run and well worth the visit. We'll have to check out the campground next time we're there.

Just a quickie, my grandparents and parents are all from the Tampa area, my people have been in Florida since the 1840's except for grandma who was a Seminole. While your wonderful bus is being worked on, take a side trip in the mini to Eureka Springs. I promise, you will not be sorry. Looking across the canal from the park, is where my family settled in the 1930's or so. It is Florida in the raw, before Mickey Mouse and tourism discovered it. Happy travels.

Sorry.. I don't know a thing about towing behind a Rialta (or any other motorhome).

We've not noticed much reduction in fuel economy when towing with our bus, but our bus has a 8v71 diesel two stroke engine. I would suspect that a smaller engine would notice it more.
