My boyfriend and I have a similar arrangement to the woman you encountered. He enjoys travel, but not the long term, random destination-style travel that I do. Not only that, but he has a very good job that he enjoys and doesn't want to leave, and his job pays enough that I'm able to pay a reduced share of our rent while I'm traveling.

As a result, we take one or two vacations a year together, but the rest of the travel I do is solo. Six months after we met I went to Korea for a year (it had been in my plans before we met), and we did fine with being apart for an entire year, so when I returned, we decided that it's fine if I want to "run off" for a couple months at a time. He knows it's what I need to keep me happy, and I know that having a home base is what he needs to keep him happy, so it works. Do I sometimes wish he was with me? Of course. But, I also find that not having a partner with me while I travel tends to make me more social while I'm on the road.

When you stay true to yourself, it's much easier to recognize when a potential compatible partner is walking similar path. And the first rig that Chris and I traveled in didn't have a bathroom.. we frequently changed our bathroom decor :)

We totally agree with that thought, Mike! It's awesome to encounter others that have experienced a similar joining of paths that we did. Looking forward to following you guys, and hopefully meet up out there somewhere on the road!

Great site! My wife Heidi(second commenter) told me to come look. I am looking forward to digging deeper now! On the topic at hand, it seems you and Chris had a similar situation to Heidi and I. We had both been ready in our minds to travel alone and were quite happy with those plans and in fact were living that life on our own already. Neither one of us was "looking", but you can't help it when something catches your eye. After seeing various posts after a while on vandwellers yahoo group, we were drawn together. Seems it often happens about the time you resolve to be alone. I often think it is part of something bigger in that when you realize you are enough on your own and don't *need* another to be happy, doors open. Just a thought.

So far I have been very lucky. Both of my big relationships in life, have been with women that love to travel. But make no mistake, even when you find your ideal travel companion, there is still platy of opportunity for scuffle! :)

As a full time solo nomad traveling in a very small camper van for the last 3 years i can say the experience has been some what up and down. Most of the time i am very much at ease with my solo life, being able to pack up and head down what ever track comes my way. The lifestyle this solo nomad lives can be a little daunting to most, with the bathroom's decor changing from day to day the only thing that stays the same is the shovel, that in it self a challenge for most. Although the need to share that star filled night that great sunrise or to cook for someone other then one's self is something that most solo's have in common myself included. So my advice is to stay true to yourself and your needs, and to consider others that maybe traveling with you the next time you want change the bathrooms decor,or the out door setting. :)

Sort of had a bout with girlfriend travel troubles as of late, plus some health issues. Now as a time-honored single traveler, with road-trips a-plenty, the new girl-friend (for the last 6 months) brought more baggage into the equation than every Amtrak train has the day after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately for romance and un-related to to the travel woes, we broke up recently. So I'm tuning up my tow vehicle and will be in the Sunshine soon with me, myself, and my Oyster-Can travel trailer.
I do not know how this gal could have traveled with me.
My best advice (if you have someone with that is unable to travel due to excessive baggage) would be to buy the significant-other a harmonica so they can play the blues while your away. You are right that finding someone who will (and can) travel with you is akin to winning that lottery.
