Hi there!

I found your website through a Google search and I've been reading your various posts with great fascination and appreciation, as I am in the very first stages of planning my own technomadic adventure.

I felt the urge to comment on this particular post, though, because I spotted someone I know, proving that this is indeed a very small world! I grew up in the same suburb of Cape Town as Andy Duncan and our mothers were good friends. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him there and reassured myself that it was in fact Andy by reading the caption underneath. What a crazy world!

Thank you so much for writing these posts - they are a great inspiration and education to me.

I totally agree - being location independent doesn't limit your social life or sense of community in any way. In fact, it's opened my eyes to the many MORE ways I can connect with people. I often hear people saying things like "interacting online is just a way to opt out of real life relationships" or suggesting that online relationships are superficial. I've had a fantastic time meeting online friends (like you and Chris!) and I think the internet provides a way for us to accelerate our relationships. Meeting you and other online friends felt like we'd known each other for ages.

Have a great time at Burning Man! So glad you got sorted with Camp Nomadia!

Cath

Yes, a moving tribe of nomads would create a community. But it would also be quite limiting for many - as us nomads tend to be quite independent minded. It would also require a common traveling mode (such as RV, plane, train, etc. - which not all nomads share, of course) and likely some common sense of purpose (attending festivals, national parks, a chain of RV parks, volunteer work, career, etc.) The retiree full time RVers have a great idea with Escapees - they have a series of parks that they all move between. So, each is independent, but they have lots of rendezvous points.

That's one thing I love about sites like NuRVers, and is one purpose behind our Burning Man camp. The intention is to have a sense of tribe with lots of opportunities for rendezvouses. It's something I'd both like to be part of creating and building, and something I'm reluctant to put much energy into organizing as it would take away from my own path right now. :) So far, connecting with other nomadic minds and rendezvousing as it manifests works great. It's awesome to get together as our paths converge, share stories, educate on resources, etc. and then move on. I'd love to have more specific rendezvouses on the calendar as well, than just Burning Man and the NuRVers annual rally.

Great article...I wonder, though, if a more ongoing community is possible for nomads by traveling together, or even mostly together, like a tribe. I know in some ways this goes against the instincts of a lot of nomads because it, in some way, limits their freedom. But it seems to be a viable option for those wanting to maintain an ongoing community, yet continue to wander.

Even though I don't travel as much as you three do, after leaving my old hometown, I think I am just as much in contact now with my old friends as I was then, I just don't see them in person as often.

Yay interwebs!
